I had a wedding last September where the bride’s first look was shot entirely on the Sony A1’s CFexpress Type A slot. We wrapped at eleven, I drove home exhausted, plugged the card into a no-name USB-C reader I’d bought off a marketplace listing two weeks earlier, and watched the macOS Finder copy dialog estimate 47 minutes for a 128GB offload. Forty-seven minutes. On a card rated 800MB/s read and a reader whose box claimed “USB 3.2 Gen 2 support.”
I pulled the card out, borrowed my partner’s ProGrade PG09 the next morning, and offloaded the same 128GB in under four minutes.
That’s the difference a real reader makes, and it’s why this roundup exists. Card readers are the cheapest piece of gear in your kit and the one that most directly determines how much of your life you spend watching a progress bar. A reader that honestly saturates the card interface saves you dozens of hours a year. A bad one costs you those hours plus the occasional corrupted file, because cheap readers under-volt cards and cause mount failures mid-copy.

Who this list is for
You shoot with a mirrorless or cinema camera that uses some combination of SDXC UHS-II, CFexpress Type A, or CFexpress Type B. You want to offload cards at the speed they’re actually rated, not at the speed of whatever generic USB-C dongle came in a Prime Day bundle. You work on a Mac, Windows laptop, or iPad, and you want a reader that plays nicely with all three.
This isn’t for you if you only shoot UHS-I SD cards — any $10 reader works fine at UHS-I speeds and a premium reader buys you nothing. It’s also not for you if you shoot RED or ARRI formats; those have proprietary readers outside this scope.
What actually matters
Four things. Everything else is noise.
USB interface vs card interface. The reader has to be fast enough that the card is the bottleneck, not the USB cable. UHS-II SD needs USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps). CFexpress Type A needs Gen 2 minimum. CFexpress Type B deserves Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) if your host supports it — most 2023+ MacBook Pros and high-end Windows laptops do. A reader advertised as “USB 3.0” or “Gen 1” is a 5Gbps reader, which throttles UHS-II cards on long transfers.
Thermal behavior under sustained load. Small plastic readers get hot during a full-card offload and throttle silently. Your first 20GB flies, then throughput drops 30% for the next 108GB. Every reader on this list has aluminum housing or enough thermal mass to sustain rated speeds across a 128GB transfer. The ProGrade PG02 warms noticeably but I’ve never seen it throttle. The Angelbird MK2 stays cool.
Multi-slot vs single-format. If you shoot a body with both CFexpress and SD (most modern pro mirrorless), a dual-slot reader is worth every dollar — one mount, one cable, one workflow. If you only shoot one format, a single-slot reader is fine and often cheaper. The one exception: if you’re a DIT or studio shooter juggling four or more cards from multiple bodies, the Kingston Workflow Station changes the math entirely.
Utility software. ProGrade’s Refresh Pro and Angelbird’s own toolkit extend card life measurably. Sony’s Memory Card File Rescue is the only tool that reliably recovers corrupted Sony-format Type A cards. Kingston, Lexar, and Sabrent offer no maintenance utilities — the reader is the hardware, full stop. If you care about card longevity, buy into an ecosystem that cares too.
Sabrent CR-CSDM Dual-Slot UHS-II Reader
The budget pick. At around $30 it’s the cheapest reader on this list by a factor of three, and it punches far above its weight on SD UHS-II. Dual slots for full-size SD and microSD, both UHS-II, over USB 3.2 Gen 2. Bus-powered USB-C, so it works off an iPad Pro or iPhone 15/16 without a hub. In my testing against a Lexar 2000x V90 card it hit 258MB/s reads — within 4% of what the ProGrade pulled from the same card.
Two gripes. The captive cable is short — maybe 6 inches — so it dangles off a laptop awkwardly and you’ll want a USB-C extension. And there’s no CFexpress slot, obviously. If your entire kit is SD, this is the reader I’d buy. If you shoot CFexpress you’ll still want this as a backup reader in the bag.
Lexar Professional CFexpress Type B / SD USB 3.2 Gen 2 Reader (LRW520)
The value pick for Type B shooters. At around $55 you get dual slots for CFexpress Type B and UHS-II SD in a compact housing, with both USB-C and USB-A cables in the box. USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10Gbps — not the faster Gen 2x2, so you don’t get full Type B peak speeds above 1000MB/s. For most photographers that’s fine; for cinema work, spend up to the Angelbird.
Lexar’s QA is uneven post-acquisition, but I’ve had this reader for 14 months with no problems. The detachable cable is a real advantage over the ProGrade PG02 — if the cable goes, you replace the cable, not the reader.
ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B + SD UHS-II Dual-Slot Reader (PG02)
The reader I actually use for primary offloads. At around $80 the ProGrade PG02 costs a bit more than the Lexar, and about a third of that premium is the Refresh Pro toolchain. The rest is build quality you can feel — the aluminum housing, the magnetic plate that clips onto your laptop lid for a mobile workstation, and the ProGrade QA reputation that means this reader will work in five years.
Gen 2 rather than Gen 2x2 is the main knock. On my M3 MacBook Pro with a Lexar Professional CFexpress Type B 512GB, the PG02 sustained 1020MB/s read on a full-card offload — good enough for most work, but an Angelbird MK2 on the same card hit 1780MB/s. If you’re offloading 512GB or 1TB CFexpress cards daily, the Angelbird earns its extra money. If you’re doing 128GB cards a few times a week, the PG02 is plenty.
The one real knock: it’s still USB 3.2 Gen 2. If you’re investing in CFexpress 4.0 cards rated north of 2GB/s, this reader won’t unlock their full speed — step up to the PG05.6 below. For CFexpress 2.0 cards the PG02 remains the right pick, and unlike the Angelbird the USB-C cable is detachable, so a frayed cable doesn’t kill the reader.
ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type A + SDXC UHS-II Dual-Slot Reader (PG09)
The Sony Type A pick. Sony’s CFexpress Type A format is niche — almost exclusively used in the A7S III, A1, A9 III, and FX3/FX6 — and third-party readers for it are thin on the ground. The ProGrade PG09 is the one serious option outside Sony’s own MRW-G2, and it’s the one I’d buy.
Refresh Pro works on ProGrade Type A cards through this reader and nothing else. That alone makes it the right pick if you’ve bought into the ProGrade CFexpress Type A card ecosystem. Stock on Amazon can be intermittent — CFexpress Type A volume is small — so grab one when you see it. The USB-C cable is detachable, same as the PG02.
ProGrade PG05.6 CFexpress Type B USB 4.0 Single-Slot Reader
The 2026 upgrade. ProGrade’s PG05.6 is the first reader on this list built for CFexpress 4.0 — USB4 at 40Gbps, which is roughly four times the bandwidth of the Gen 2 PG02 and finally enough headroom for the 4GB/s+ reads current-generation cards are rated for. At around $100 it’s priced in line with the PG09, and on a 2023+ MacBook Pro with USB4 ports I’ve seen it sustain 3.2GB/s offloading a ProGrade Gold 4.0 card — roughly triple the PG02 on the same card.
Two caveats. It’s single-slot Type B only, so if you shoot a body with a Type B primary and SD backup you still want the PG02 or Lexar alongside — or pair this reader with a cheap SD reader. And USB4 hosts are rare outside recent Apple Silicon MacBook Pros, current-gen iPad Pro M4, and high-end Thunderbolt 4 Windows laptops. On a plain USB-C Gen 2 host it falls back to Gen 2 speeds — same as the PG02, for $20 more. Refresh Pro works through it, and the USB-C cable is detachable.
If you’re still shooting CFexpress 2.0 cards, skip this and buy the PG02. If you’re on CFexpress 4.0 Gold or Cobalt cards and a recent MacBook Pro, this is the reader that pays for itself on the first 1TB offload.
Sony MRW-G2 CFexpress Type A / SD Memory Card Reader
The first-party option. Sony’s own Type A reader at around $115 is the reader that ships with Sony’s professional workflow marketing. USB 3.2 Gen 2, dual-slot Type A and SD UHS-II, and — uniquely — Sony’s Memory Card File Rescue software for recovering corrupted Sony-formatted cards. If you’ve ever had a Sony card corrupt mid-shoot, that tool is genuinely the only thing that saves you.
Amazon stock has been notoriously erratic for this reader across 2024 and 2025. I’d buy the ProGrade PG09 first; consider the Sony only if you specifically need Sony’s recovery toolchain or you shoot Sony-brand Type A cards exclusively.
Angelbird Card Reader CFexpress B MK2
The cinema reader. At $159 the Angelbird MK2 is the most expensive single-card reader on this list, and it’s the one I’d hand to a DIT on a commercial shoot. USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 at 20Gbps means it saturates CFexpress Type B on hosts that support it — current MacBook Pros, high-end Windows laptops, a handful of Thunderbolt 4 docks.
Angelbird builds hardware the way they build cards: obsessively. The housing is screwed-together aluminum, genuinely passively cooled, and I’ve never seen it warm under load. Direct-from-card editing in DaVinci Resolve works cleanly — you can open a ProRes 4K project straight off a CFexpress B card in this reader and cut without offloading first. That workflow alone saves a wedding editor an hour a week.
Knock: Gen 2x2 hosts are still rare. On a standard USB-C Gen 2 host, you get 10Gbps — same speed as the ProGrade PG02 for 65% more money. Buy this if you know your host supports Gen 2x2, or if you’re committed to Angelbird’s ecosystem.
Kingston Workflow Station
The studio pick. The Kingston Workflow Station (about $125 for the dock, plus roughly $35 per miniHub) is a different tool entirely — a desk-mounted, mains-powered dock that accepts four hot-swappable reader modules. SD UHS-II, microSD UHS-II, XQD, and USB-A/C miniHubs are all available separately. When you plug four SD cards in at once, they offload genuinely in parallel — not round-robin on a shared bus.
For a single-photographer workflow this is overkill. For a wedding DIT managing two photographers plus a video team, or a studio shooting multicam, this is a time-saver you can feel. The one real gap: Kingston has never made a CFexpress miniHub. If your kit is CFexpress-heavy, keep a ProGrade or Angelbird alongside.
How to choose
Shoot only SD UHS-II? Sabrent CR-CSDM at $30. Maybe a ProGrade PG02 at $80 later if you add a CFexpress body.
Shoot CFexpress Type B (Nikon Z8/Z9, Canon R5/R5 II, C70)? Lexar LRW520 at $55 for value, ProGrade PG02 at $80 for the Refresh Pro toolchain on CFexpress 2.0 cards, ProGrade PG05.6 at $100 if you’ve moved to CFexpress 4.0 cards and a USB4 host, Angelbird MK2 at $159 if you have a Gen 2x2 host and shoot a lot of volume.
Shoot Sony CFexpress Type A (A7S III, A1, A9 III, FX3/6)? ProGrade PG09 at $100 is the default. Sony MRW-G2 at $115 only if you need Sony’s recovery software specifically.
DIT, studio, or multicam workflow? Kingston Workflow Station plus two or three miniHubs. Buy the CFexpress reader of your choice separately.
Offload on iPad in the field? Any bus-powered reader on this list except the Kingston. I use the ProGrade PG02 most often.

I’ve said this in other roundups and I’ll say it again here: reliability-per-dollar is the only thing that matters in a working kit. The $30 reader that takes 47 minutes to offload a card you can copy in 4 minutes is costing you money every shoot. The $100 reader that comes with a toolchain to extend your card life is saving you money every quarter.
