How do I get a photo critique?
Open the ShutterCoach app, tap "Analyze a Photo" on the home screen, and select a photo from your library or take a new one. Our AI will analyze your photo and provide personalized feedback within seconds.
How does the AI analyze my photos?
ShutterCoach uses advanced AI models to evaluate your photos across 6 key skills: Composition, Lighting, Exposure, Focus, Color, and Storytelling. Each skill receives a score from 1-10 with specific, actionable feedback. The AI considers genre context (portrait, landscape, street, etc.) and your EXIF metadata to provide relevant critiques.
What photography genres does ShutterCoach support?
ShutterCoach supports 15+ photography genres including Portrait, Landscape, Street, Macro, Wildlife, Architecture, Food, Sports, Night, Abstract, Black & White, Documentary, Fashion, Product, and Travel photography. The AI automatically detects your genre or you can specify it for more targeted feedback.
What is Photo DNA and how is it calculated?
Photo DNA is your personalized photography identity built from your critique history. It tracks your strengths and growth areas across all 6 skills, identifies your preferred genres, and shows how your photography style evolves over time. It updates with each critique to give you a comprehensive view of your photographic journey.
How do streaks and shields work?
Streaks track your daily photography practice. Get a critique each day to maintain your streak. Shields protect your streak when life gets busy—you can miss up to 3 days without breaking your streak. Shields regenerate over time, encouraging consistent practice without punishing occasional breaks.
How do Daily Challenges work?
Daily Challenges are AI-generated prompts personalized to your skill level and Photo DNA. They target your growth areas while celebrating your strengths. Complete a challenge by submitting a photo that meets the criteria. Challenges refresh daily and completing them contributes to your streak.
How does the free trial work?
When you first install ShutterCoach, you get 5 days of full access to every feature — unlimited critiques, unlimited chat follow-ups, batch import and cull, shoot reports, and more. After the trial, you can keep using ShutterCoach for free with 1 critique per day and 1 follow-up per critique, or unlock everything forever for a one-time $9.99 purchase.
What does the $9.99 purchase include?

Can I ask follow-up questions about my critique?
Yes! After receiving a critique, you can ask the AI follow-up questions for deeper understanding. During your trial or after purchasing, you get unlimited follow-ups. Free users get 1 follow-up per critique. Ask things like "How could I improve the composition?" or "What lighting setup would work better?"
Can I get feedback on the same photo twice?
Yes, you can re-submit the same photo for a fresh critique. This is useful if you want to see how different AI models analyze your work, or if you've made edits and want to compare feedback. Each submission counts toward your daily critique limit.
Does ShutterCoach work with RAW files?
ShutterCoach works with photos from your iPhone camera roll, which includes HEIF, JPEG, and ProRAW formats. For best results, we recommend using processed images rather than unedited RAW files, as the AI evaluates the final image presentation.
Can I use ShutterCoach offline?
ShutterCoach requires an internet connection to analyze photos, as the AI processing happens securely in the cloud. However, you can view your critique history, Photo DNA, achievements, and progress offline. Your data syncs when you're back online.
Are my photos stored on your servers?
No. Your photos are temporarily sent to our AI for analysis, then immediately deleted. We never store your photos on our servers. GPS metadata is stripped before upload for privacy. All critique history is stored locally on your device and synced via iCloud if you're signed in.
What cameras or phones work best with ShutterCoach?
ShutterCoach works with any photo in your iPhone camera roll, regardless of what camera captured it. Import photos from DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, or any device. For the best experience, use photos at least 1024px on the longest edge. Very small or heavily compressed images may receive less detailed feedback.
How do achievements work?
ShutterCoach has 45+ achievements across skill mastery, genre exploration, streak milestones, and special accomplishments. Earn badges by improving specific skills, exploring different genres, maintaining streaks, and hitting milestones. Achievements are displayed in your profile and contribute to your overall progress.
How do I share my achievements?
Tap any achievement to view it, then use the share button to create a shareable image. You can post directly to social media or save to your camera roll. Achievement cards include your username (if set), the badge, and when you earned it.
What is the Before/After feature?
Before/After lets you track improvement by comparing critiques of the same scene over time. Re-shoot a photo after practicing, submit it for critique, and see how your scores improved. It's a powerful way to visualize your growth as a photographer.
How do I restore my purchases?
Go to Settings in the app and tap "Restore Purchases." This will restore your one-time purchase on any device signed in with the same Apple ID.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find your ShutterCoach purchase, and request a refund. There is no subscription to cancel — ShutterCoach is a one-time purchase.
How do I delete my data?
Go to Settings in the app and scroll down to "Delete All Data." This will remove all locally stored critiques, achievements, and preferences. Since we don't store your data on our servers (photos are deleted immediately after analysis), there's nothing to delete on our end.
What is Dynamic Island integration?
On iPhone 14 Pro and later, ShutterCoach shows real-time critique progress in the Dynamic Island. Watch your photo being analyzed and see when your feedback is ready, even when the app is in the background.
The app isn't working. What should I do?
Try these steps: 1) Make sure you have a stable internet connection, 2) Force quit and restart the app, 3) Update to the latest version from the App Store, 4) Restart your device. If the issue persists, contact support@shuttercoach.app with details about what's happening.
