What Is Aspect Ratio?

Aspect ratio defines the shape of a photograph. It is the proportional relationship between the width and the height of an image, written as two numbers separated by a colon. A 3:2 aspect ratio means the image is 1.5 times wider than it is tall. A 1:1 ratio produces a perfect square. The numbers describe proportion, not physical size — a 3:2 image could be 6 inches by 4 inches or 30 inches by 20 inches.

Every camera produces images at a native aspect ratio determined by its sensor dimensions. Most full-frame and APS-C cameras use 3:2, inherited from the 35mm film frame (36mm x 24mm).
